CLPA List of Upcoming DC Area Policy Meetings (October 17th -October 21st)

The DC Council will hold a Legislative Meeting this week. During the session, they will have a final vote on several bills CLPA has been tacking, including the Elections Modernization Amendment Act, the Paternity Establishment Amendment Act and the Partition of Real Property Act. These bills should pass unanimously as they are on the consent agenda, but CLPA will still provide a vote report.

However, not on the consent agenda is the vote on the Local Resident Voting Rights Amendment Act of 2022, which would allow non-citizen residents who meet the voting eligibility requirements to vote in the District's local elections (such as for the Mayor, Chairman, and Councilmembers, among other positions). In this bill, "non-citizen residents" would include many different groups of people, including temporary residents (such as people with a visa or temporary protected status), permanent residents (also known as green card holders), DACA recipients, refugees, and undocumented immigrants. CLPA will provide a vote report on this as well.

The Prince George's County Council Board of Education has an important public hearing this week. This Thursday at 6:00 pm, the board will host its first of two public hearings on proposed school boundary changes in the County. The second hearing will occur on October 25th. This follows proposals the school board recently reviewed that would increase enrollment at newer school buildings while lowering the number of students attending schools scheduled for either renovations or replacement.

In Virginia, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will hold its Legislative Committee meeting. In the meeting, among other agenda items, they will review the County's 2023 Draft Legislative Program and their draft 2023 Fairfax County Human Services Issue Paper. The Legislative Program draft lays out the County's Legislative Priorities for 2023 in the follow issue areas:

  • Funding Core Services

  • Governance

  • Budget Priorities

  • Environment

  • General Laws

  • Housing

  • Human Services

  • Land Use

  • Public Safety

  • Taxation

Fairfax County's draft Human Services Issue Paper notes its priorities for 2023 are Affordable Housing, Behavioral Health, and Substance Use Disorder. The paper also notes the County's policy positions on issues related to Medicaid Waivers, Children and Families, Older Adults and People with Disabilities, and Health, Well Being, and Safety.
