CLPA List of Upcoming DC Area Policy Meetings (November 28th-December 2nd)

Hopefully, everyone had a good Thanksgiving! There are not many meetings this week after the break, but here is a list of the most important meetings that residents should pay attention to.

The DC Council is not having a Legislative Meeting this week but will have a number of committee meetings. The Human Services Committee will have a hearing on Wednesday at 10:00 am, where they will discuss B24-0120, the “Emergency Rental Assistance Reform Amendment Act of 2021.” The bill, if enacted, will aid tenants in their recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic and reduce administrative barriers to Emergency Rental Assistance Program payments for tenants in need.

In Maryland, there are no Prince George’s County Council or Board of Education meetings this week; however, in the Montgomery County Council, they will have public hearings and final votes. On the agenda is Expedited Bill 31-22, which would change the administration and eligibility requirements of the Small Business Innovation Research and Small Business Technology Transfer Matching Grant Program, and Expedited Bill 29-22, which would update County law to reflect the required numbers of votes due to the expansion of the County Council from 9 to 11 members.

In Virginia, there are no legislative meetings this week; however, their DC Area school boards will have several. There will be a Joint Alexandria City Council/School Board Sub-Committee meeting today at 5:00 pm, followed by an Alexandria City Board of Education Work Session at 6:30 pm. The Fairfax School Board will meet and conduct their FY23 Mid-Year Budget Review. They will also review applications to renew the alternative accreditation plans for five County’s special purpose schools. The Arlington County School Board will have a meeting this week where they will discuss their legislative package for the upcoming Virginia General Assembly session. Examples of issues the school board supports this session include:

Current policy regarding eligibility for in-state college tuition for Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals and Temporary Protected Status students
Universal free lunch at schools
The return to the General Assembly’s prior practice of funding support services to school divisions based upon local school division practices
Legislation to combat the act of making a hoax communication to 9-1-1 with the intent of triggering an immediate law enforcement response
The goals of the Culturally Relevant and Inclusive Education Practices Advisory Committee that was established during the 2020 General Assembly.
