While most legislative bodies are currently out of session or conducting routine meetings with limited policy coverage, the DC Council has some significant bills on the agenda that you should know about.
1. B25-0034 - Expanding Access to Fertility Treatment Amendment Act of 2023: The first bill, B25-0034, also known as the "Expanding Access to Fertility Treatment Amendment Act of 2023," focuses on improving access to fertility treatments for individuals and couples in the District of Columbia. If passed, this bill could significantly impact the availability, affordability, and inclusivity of fertility treatments in our region. It aims to remove barriers and make these treatments more accessible to those in need.
2. B25-0164 - Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Temporary Amendment Act of 2023: The second noteworthy bill is B25-0164, the "Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Temporary Amendment Act of 2023." This bill is aimed at implementing comprehensive reforms in the realm of policing and the criminal justice system. It seeks to address various aspects of law enforcement practices, accountability, and justice reform within the District. This bill's progress is being closely monitored by the CLPA, which will provide a detailed vote report and bill analysis once the votes conclude.
3. B25-0293 - Rent Stabilized Housing Inflation Protection Emergency Amendment Act of 2023: Lastly, the DC Council will also discuss B25-0293, the "Rent Stabilized Housing Inflation Protection Emergency Amendment Act of 2023." The CLPA has recently conducted an in-depth analysis of this bill. If enacted, this legislation would temporarily limit rent increases in rent-stabilized units in the District for a period of two years. Under this bill, rent would only increase by a maximum of 6.9% or the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W) plus an additional 2%, whichever is lower.
It's essential to keep an eye on these bills as their passage could potentially impact everyone in the DC metropolitan area. We encourage you to stay informed about these bills and actively engage in the legislative process by reaching out to your elected representatives to share your thoughts and concerns. CLPA will provide continual updates throughout the week on any new development here on our site, on Twitter: @LocalPolicyCTR and on Facebook @localpolicycenter.
