CLPA Weekly Policy Recap and September 6th - September 10th List of DC Area Policy Meetings

Here is a recap of policy from the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia that CLPA covered during the previous week, as well as a list of meetings for the week of September 6th- September 10th. The Prince George’s County Council has returned from recess and there are a number of School Board meetings across the DC area this week as students are now beginning to return to school. Other counties are scheduled to return from recess the week of September 13th.

Statewide

Maryland

Last week, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced that he is directing the State Superintendent of Schools and the Interagency Commission on School Construction to conduct an immediate statewide assessment of ventilation and air filtration in Maryland public school buildings.

Virginia

The Virginia Supreme Court last week ruled unanimously in the Commonwealth’s favor affirming their authority to remove the Robert E. Lee Monument. The ruling allows the Department of General Services to carry out its removal plan, which according to Virginia Governor Ralph Northam is “complicated by several logistical and security concerns, including street closures and the equipment required to ensure the safe removal of the 12-ton statue.” The removal of the statue will be a multi-day process and a removal date will be announced at later date.

Washington, DC

Washington DC Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office released its most recent COVID-19 data. There have been 200 new COVID-19 cases with one death. The District’s overall positive case total now stands at 55,918 with 1,162 deaths.
