Here is CLPA’s weekly recap of important policy news you may have missed, as well as a list of upcoming meetings.




Statewide Updates


District of Columbia


Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau officially transmitted the results of the 2020 Census to Mayor Muriel Bowser. Now, the DC Council’s Subcommittee on Redistricting can announce when the redistricting process officially starts. The DC Office of Planning (OP), which houses the DC State Data Center, released an online tool to help interested stakeholders participate in the redistricting process by creating their own maps to submit to the Subcommittee.

Maryland


Last week, Maryland Governor Larry Hogan announced that he is immediately authorizing COVID-19 booster shots for all Marylanders 65 and older who are living in congregate care settings, including nursing homes, assisted living facilities, residential drug treatment centers, and developmentally disabled group homes. In addition, Governor Hogan announced the launch of the Community COVID-19 Vaccination Project, a $3 million community-based, door-to-door canvassing effort to directly engage Marylanders living in areas with low vaccination rates in order to encourage more vaccinations and provide health education in at-risk neighborhoods.

Virginia


Last Friday, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced the additional appointments to his Administration including Abbey Philips as the new Assistant Secretary of the Commonwealth. Abbey served as Senator Jennifer McClellan’s Chief of Staff for nearly ten years, beginning with then Delegate McClellan in 2012. Abbey is a co-founder of Collective 365 and has been a volunteer with Henrico CASA since 2008. Abbey earned her Master of Social Work with a concentration in Administration, Planning, and Policy from the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Social Work.


Governor Northan also announced several Board Appointments including:

  • Board of Nursing

  • Board of Trustees of the Virginia Museum of Natural History
