District of Columbia



DC Council


The DC Council will have a legislative meeting on Tuesday at noon. Bills of interest on the agenda include the following:


Final Reading and Vote on Proposed Bills

  • Bill 25-247-Female Genital Mutilation Prohibition Act of 2024

  • Bill 25-27-New Student Loan Borrower Bill of Rights Amendment Act of 2023


First Reading and Vote on Proposed Bills

Final Reading and Vote on Temporary Legislation

DC State Board of Education

This Wednesday at 5:30, the DC State Board of Education will hold its monthly public meeting. During the meeting, a panel will discuss SR24-18, which aims to improve staffing and support of school nurses in D. C schools, emphasizing the need for more health care. Further, the board will deliberate on SR24-19, emphasizing the reappointment of Daniel Davis as the Chief Student Advocate, a key position in protecting students’ welfare. SR24-20 will focus on appointing student representatives to various ad hoc committees so students can be involved in education governance. Last, SR24-21 suggests expanding the “Education as a Civil Right Working Group.”

 

Maryland




Maryland General Assembly:

The Maryland House of Delegates and the Maryland Senate have adjourned for the year and will be back in session in January 2025.

Charles County




Board of Charles County Commissioners


The Board of Charles County Commissioners will convene for a meeting tomorrow at 9:00 am, which will involve approving several items, including letters of support for the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom and Memorandums of Understanding with the Maryland State Highway Administration. A morning briefing will also be held on the proposed Charles County Government Bond Authority and a presentation from the Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland. During the evening session, there will be more approval measures, such as budget changes and decisions on boards and commissions. The Board will hold a public hearing at 6:00 pm on the Villages of Wooded Glen & Piney Reach Master Plan.

Montgomery County


Montgomery County Council


Tomorrow, at 11 am, the Montgomery County Council  will hold a public meeting. At 3:00 pm, the Council will interview David McBain, the County Executive's nominee for Assistant Chief of Police in the Field Services Bureau. This session will include two important public hearings:

During the legislative session, the Council will also present three bills

  • Bill 18-24, Housing Policy - Standards and Procedures - Amendments

  • Bill 19-24, Taxicab Licenses - Amended Requirements

  • Bill 20-24, Public Campaign Financing - Amendments


Montgomery County Board of Education

The Montgomery County Board of Education will have a Business Meeting on Thursday at 1 in the afternoon. Important items on the agenda include approval of major procurement contracts and change orders for Parkland Middle School expansion, funding for the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Grant, and funding for programs that will enhance adolescent health and well-being. The Board will also review and approve the summary of the FY 2024 budget and transfers to complete the fiscal year while approving the provisions of the FY 2025 budget for future supported projects.


Other features include an oral debate on reopening schools for the 2024-2025 academic year and a close look at literacy performance as per the data collected in the Spring of 2024. The Board will acknowledge Hispanic Heritage Month and listen to the comments from the community members. Updates on construction updates, land-related matters, and legal expenses will also be provided.


Prince George's County



Prince George's County Council


Tomorrow, at 10:30 am, the Prince George's County Council  will meet to discuss several important pieces of legislation.

  • CB-079-2024 seeks to establish an investigation unit within the Department of Permitting, Inspections, and Enforcement to address the Housing Code violations more efficiently. This bill will enhance housing code enforcement by offering extra personnel and equipment.

  • CB-080-2024 aims to increase the tax rate for the properties that are vacant and unfit to ensure that they are dealt with appropriately.

  • CB-081-2024 is aimed at community-based police training, emphasizing cooperation with local institutions and non-profit organizations working on police reform.

  • CB-083-2024 establishes a pilot program authorizing the use of noise abatement monitoring systems in Prince George’s County to enforce specific motor vehicle noise regulations and address issues related to excessive vehicle noise


Prince George's County Board of Education


The Prince George's County Board of Education will not have a full public meeting of the Board this week.

 

Virginia



Virginia General Assembly:

The Virginia House of Delegates and the Virginia Senate have adjourned for the 2024 session. They will be back in session in January 2025.

Alexandria City



Alexandria City Council:

The Alexandria City Council is not in session this week.


Alexandria City Board of Education


The Alexandria City Board of Education will meet Thursday at 6 pm . Among the key topics are updates on the Alexandria City Public Schools (ACPS) redistricting process, which will involve discussions on community engagement, data analysis, and how future recommendations will impact equitable outcomes for students. Additionally, financial matters, including the FY 2025 and FY 2026 budget reports, will be reviewed, offering transparency on fiscal allocations and upcoming budget planning. The modernization of George Mason Elementary School will also be addressed, alongside important updates on school accountability and accreditation results.

Arlington County




Arlington County Board

The will not have a full Board meeting this week.


Tomorrow at 3 pm the Arlington County Board  with hold a Recessed Meeting. They will discussed issues concerning land use and community development in Arlington County. Notably, the Board will review amendments to the Pentagon City Phased Development Site Plan, including proposed changes to 12th Street Landing that would allow additional building height and density, enhancing the area’s urban design. Another significant item is the conversion of 30 residential units into hotel units at the Millennium at National Landing, aligning with broader regional development goals. The Board will also consider partnerships to upgrade sports facilities at Kenmore Middle School through the conversion of fields to synthetic turf, in collaboration with local sports organizations.


Arlington County School Board

The will not hold a full public meeting this week.

The Arlington County School Board's meets this Thursday at 5:30 p.m. to address personnel actions, followed by the regular School Board Meeting open to the public at 7 p.m. During the meeting the board will review proposed revisions to policies concerning electronic participation in advisory committee meetings and individual member meetings. The Superintendent supports these updates to enhance operational efficiency and transparency.. Additionally, the meeting will include a review of the FY 2024-25 Internal Audit Work Plan and a decision on the adoption of new textbooks for the 9th Grade Immersion program at Wakefield High School.

Fairfax County




Fairfax County Board of Supervisors

The Fairfax County Board of Supervisors will not have a full public meeting this week.


Fairfax County School Board

The Fairfax County School Board will conduct a public meeting on Thursday at 7:00 p. m. The agenda includes the approval of the $546,953 Boundary Review Consultant. The Superintendent will also give her annual performance review monitoring report. A policy review will concern Executive Limitation #8's decision to retain the existing policy. The presentations for the night will include updates on academic matters, strategic plans, and state accountability. New business items will also consist of the monitoring report on the instructional program and the 2025 State and Federal Legislative Program.
